Capacity Building: The strongest instrument of driving development

“Since we encountered CFE, we’ve changed our approach of leadership and financial management.” Says Ayub Musolo, the Executive Director of Multi-Purpose & Community Empowerment Association, during our discussion with him.

Capacity Building is increasing knowledge and skills in people, organizations, institutions or governments. Capacity building enables the holistic growth of an organization and improves impact in the society. Children’s mission Africa is founded under this strategic pillar. We envision a continent where families live in dignity by ensuring that our implementing partners are strengthened so that they can impact the communities they serve without limitations. With this in mind, we influence our partners so that they can also influence other bodies within the communities. Center For Evangelism (CFE) our partner in Uganda have influenced some of the community based organization within the villages they work in.

“Since we encountered CFE, we’ve changed our approach of leadership and financial management.” Says Ayub Musolo, the Executive Director of Multi-Purpose & Community Empowerment Association, during our discussion with him.

This CBO operates in seven districts within Busoga where CFE engages with the community.  The organization is driven by WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) as their key agenda while serving the society.  In addition, they run a vocational school to train on computer packages, maintenance and repair, hair dressing, tailoring and motor vehicle repair.

“The training we received from CFE has helped us realize some of the gaps in our organization such as lack of management skills and it helped us overcome this challenge,” Ayub explains.  “ We introduced a savings culture for members in our 50 groups as opposed to the past when we use to contribute money for certain occasions such as burials and wedding.”

“As a result the group managed to get an opportunity to create a relationship with the Bank of Uganda and were trained in healthy borrowing.” Ayub elaborates further.

CFE has influenced the group who has also trained their members in record keeping. Consequently, famers have seen their businesses expand. Also, the students in the vocational training are showing interest in savings so that they are able to borrow and grow from one level to the next. The group is observing a lot of changes in the lives of its members. The availability of the loan borrowing has put more children back to school and provided for other expenses. Additionally, there has been a reduction in domestic violence within the community.

Jackson Omwangala the project officer says that they need capacity development in leadership and governance, financial management, group dynamics and resource mobilization. These skills will empower them to become a more effective organization in their service to the community.
